I'm back?

I doubt anyone will ever read these, but after I set both my daughters up with blogs and they've gotten super excited over posting to theirs, I figured I'd see about posting some stuff myself on my old blog.

Hey, why not check out my daughter's blogs?

Olympic Pole Dancing

I asked my wife, a former volleyball player, if the attire of women's beach volleyball players needed to be so skimpy. Perhaps to keep cool, she suggested. OK, I thought- a possible explanation. It made sense, after all keeping cool is probably important.

But after looking what the men beach volleyball players were wearing, I figured it out. Women face a double standard in certain sports. The male players can wear baggy shorts and a loose fitting t-shirt, and they're just fine. Women need their butt cheeks hanging out. And what is up with bikini wearing boob-bouncing volleyball cheerleaders? This is the Olympics, it should represent the pinnacle of competition and sport. If an event cannot stand on it's own without the sexual exploitation of women during the timeouts and TV commercial breaks, what hope is there for women ever achieving the respect the rightfully deserve as athletes?

If you don't think there is a double standard, ask yourself why the men in beach volleyball don't wear speedos, or why there aren't Chippendale dancers out there during the breaks in action during a men's game.

Call me a prude, I can accept that. And I'm certainly in the minority, I can accept that too. But if one of my little girls ever had the chance to compete internationally in a sport, I'd hope the spectators would admire them for their athletic ability, character, and good sportsmanship, not for the amount of skin they show on the court.

God, can you hear me now!?

Church worship services can be loud, and I've left my fair share of Sunday morning services with my ears ringing. I never thought much about it, but seeing people with earplugs in their ears was sort of a wakeup call for me. I guess needing to shout (no joke) at my wife just to communicate with her wasn't bad enough for me to realize there might be a problem. This is a bit surprising, because I'll actually wear earplugs when I vacuum and mow the lawn, but for some reason it never occurred to me to bring my earplugs along to church.

Now, hear me out, and do excuse the pun. The topic of volume is actually an important one and and not everyone who complains about volume on Sunday morning might not be complaining for the sake of being divisive. Excessive volume can cause hearing loss and Evangelical churches are embracing heavy metal rock concert volumes on Sunday morning. I'm not the only one taking notice of this problem.

If you notice pain or discomfort during a service, don't be afraid to speak up. And if you are the sound guy at church, you might want to keep in mind that excessive volume can damage the hearing of your congregation. Don't depend on your equipment to give you accurate sound pressure level figures, go out and invest some money in a sound meter.

It's not a matter of being cool or wimpy, I for one don't want to buy hearing aides in my mid 50s. One thing is for sure, I'm going to bring my earplugs to church next sunday.
